here are four Vedas, the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. The Vedas are the primary texts of Hinduism. They also had a vast influence on Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Traditionally the text of the Vedas was coeval with the universe. Scholars have determined that the Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas, was composed about 1500 B.C., and written about 600 B.C. However, it is unknown exactly when it was finally codified, but many experts believe this probably happened at some point after 300 B.C.
The Vedas contain hymns, incantations, and rituals from ancient India. . The Vedas are also the most ancient extensive texts in an Indo-European language, and as such are invaluable in the study of comparative religion.
Mike, thanks for bringing your insights into the Rig Veda. I understand that you are attempting a synoptic, objective introduction to the Rig Veda, for those who have never had the opportunity to read it in any form before.
With over 10,500 mantras, 1028 hymns spread apart into 10 massave books, it might be helpful to quote the first few mantras of each hymn to give your readers a feel of the Veda’s contents and also provide a synoptic account of each verse.
This is a great undertaking! Thanks Mike.

I always like to start with explanation of the characters, like Indra who is one of the chief deities in Rigveda. Explain the similarities and differences between the Brahman of the Hindu and the God of Abraham – good starting perspective for newbies. Many symbols from the Vedas were brought into Budism like “Indra’s Net”. Descriptions that people can see and visualize.
